Rulebook

SJVCGPR is committed to its participants and patrons. It is our goal to foster growth and success in all of our participants, and help color guard and percussion units become competitive members of Winter Guard International (WGI). Thus, our rule book is based off of the WGI Rulebook, with addendum to best suit your SJVCGPR experience! All directors may access the WGI rulebook after logging in, under the director tab of the website, as the WGI rulebook is password protected.

While we use the WGI Rulebook, please read the following additions/considerations that SJVCGPR has made to best serve our community of performers.

GENERAL INFORMATION

A unit may compete in any regular SJVCGPR competition that they choose to enter.

A unit must compete in two (2) SJVCGPR competitions in order to be eligible to compete in the Championship competition. One (1) SJVCGPR competition must be the first competition, which is mandatory for all performing ensembles. The first show is a classification show for color guard (with scores still given), and a regular competition for percussion units.

All schedules will be posted as registration beings, as your units will be automatically entered into the schedules (please see below under “Performance Order Procedures” for more information on performance line up).

SJVCGPR reserves the right, following consultation with the Color Guard Judges Coordinator – Robert Solomon/Michael Stone, Percussion Judges Coordinator – Phil Vallejo, to move a unit into a higher or lower classification.

When competing in a scholastic category, all participants must be enrolled in said educational institution or feeder program of said institution.

Competitors in the independent category may not have reached their 23rd birthday before June 1st of the competition year. Graduate students must be able to show proof of age upon request of the SJVCGPR Contest Coordinators. (This does not apply to Independent World Color Guards).

Directors/instructors are responsible for the conduct and good sportsmanship of their unit members and boosters at all times. Please show respect to all competing units and individual competitors as well as personnel serving in various capacities for the host school. Unsportsmanlike conduct can result in disqualification of the offending members’ unit.

The Color Guard rulebook states “Color guards in the A and Open classes may not compete with less than five (5) nor more than thirty (30) performers in the competition area at any time. Color guards in the World classes may not compete with less than five (5) nor more than forty (40) performers in the competition area at any time.” SJVCGPR is about promoting growth, participation, and education in the winter arts. If you have more than 30 or 40 members in your performing ensemble, or less than 5, and would still like to compete, please contact sjvcgpr@gmail.com for permission, as we want as many students involved as possible to foster a healthy program. Any groups marching more than the rulebook states without permission from administration may be subject to penalty.

For the safety of the student performers, flash photography is NOT allowed during performances. Video recording is allowed.

Doors will be closed at all contests while a unit is on the competition floor. Students spectating are to respect that condition and remain seated while a unit is on the floor.

All performers must sit on the back side of the gymnasium, even after their portion of the competition is completed. Units may be disqualified if members sit of the spectator side. There will be a clear “No Cross Over” boundary at each performance to show where students cannot cross over to the paid spectator side.

Regular season competition fees will be $100, and championship performances will be $250. Any groups on a wait list that do not get accepted into a show will be issued a refund. For cancellation of attendance to a show we request 2 week minimum notice. If you pull out of a show (drop) within 14 days of the show date, there is a $50 non-performance fee. The fee increases to $100 if the unit does not show up on the day of the contest.

SJVCGPR PERFORMANCE ORDER PROCEDURES

1. Performance order for the first regular season show will be based on the order in which entries are received.  Registration payment must be received by Jan. 11, 2019 in order to retain performance order.  If registration payment is not received by Jan. 11, 2019 the group will be removed from contest until registration payment is received.

2. At all other regular season shows, the order of performance will be determined by random selection using the MAST system.

3. Finals order will be determined by reverse score order at the show prior to Championships for both color guard and percussion.  In the event of a tie, order will be determined by highest Performance Analysis Score (Percussion) and highest General Effect Score (Color Guard).  If you are not present at the show before Championships you will be placed first in your competitive class.  If there are multiple groups who do not attend the show before Championships in the same class they will perform in the first slots in that class.  Performance order for these ensembles will be based on the highest ordinal at the previous attended show.

SJVCGPR CODE OF CONDUCT

In order to allow the most positive experience for participants at SJVCGPR competitions, we ask that this code of conduct be followed during all SJVCGPR competitions. Any questions or concerns regarding a unit’s performance must be expressed by the band director of the school to the SJVCGPR Circuit Coordinators, Bryan Chesi, (percussion), Esmeralda Lozano (color guard), David Lesser, or Marco Mellone.
There will be no contact with the judges by any performer, director, instructor, spectator, or parent/guardian during, or after, a competition. All questions/concerns regarding judging must be made through the Percussion Judges Coordinator – Phil Vallejo and Color Guard Judges Coordinator – Robert Solomon/Michael Stone.  Rulings made by the judges are final on all decisions concerning deductions, specific rulings, and final placement.
Unruly behavior by directors, instructors, performers, parents/guardians, or spectators will result in removal from the event.
Show design and performance material must be appropriate for family viewing. Any vulgar or suggestive movements, words, or music may result in a score deduction or disqualification. Judges’ decisions are final.

Please review WGI policies regarding deductions in scores due to non-performance related infractions.

SJVCGPR strongly supports and encourages sportsmanship, integrity, and fairness for all directors, instructors, performers, and supporters in all areas of the competition, not just practice and performance. We feel that directors, instructors, and parents/guardians are a necessary and effective instrument for instilling positive behavior among unit members. It is expected that all performers, directors, instructors, parents/guardians, and spectators represent themselves and their community in a positive way.

COLOR GUARD CLASS INTERVAL AND MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

Junior High ‘A’, Junior High ‘Open’, Scholastic Regional A ‘Bronze’ and ‘Silver’ classes, will be shortened. This allows rehearsal time to focus on training and achievement for both students and instructors. Interval time for these classes will be 6 minutes per ensemble. Show length will be 2 minutes minimum, to 3.5 minutes maximum. Minimum equipment time for the aforementioned classes are 2 minutes.

JUNIOR HIGH A                     INTERVAL: 6 MIN                  MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE 3 MIN 30 SEC
JUNIOR HIGH OPEN            INTERVAL: 6 MIN                  MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE 3 MIN 30 SEC

JUDGES CRITERIA SHEETS

All judges sheets can be found in the WGI rulebook. The only sheets that are modified for SJVCGPR are the JH and Regional A color guard sheets.

PERCUSSION BOUNDARIES

SJVCGPR will strictly enforce front side line penalties. WGI rules states there must be a 5 foot boundary between the audience and performing ensemble, which is not realistic for the performance venues SJVCGPR offers. The boundary line will be taped to the farthest out line of the painted basketball court in each gym. In the smaller gyms, this will be about 3 feet away from the audience, and in the large CNHS gym, about 5 feet. The front boundary line will be clearly marked with a blue masking tape boundary line, and the t&p judges will always help clarify before an ensemble enters the floor. Please be safe and courteous when designing shows to consider the space in the venues, meaning back sideline constraints with SJVCGPR performing venues.

If you have any questions about any of the above addendums to the WGI rulebook that pertain to SJVCGPR, please contact Esmeralda Lozaon at sjvcgpr@gmail.com for further clarification. Thank you for your participation and cooperation!
